I began photographing paint swirls when I started custom mixing paints for my sister business (refinishing furniture).  I often make custom paint colors for customers and for my own furniture pieces, as some shades need some help getting to the "just right" place.  One day, I noticed that when adding a white to a base colour to brighten it, the paint made very tantalizing shapes.  So I paused in my mixing, and started to photograph the swirls at different angles.  Once I went through my photos, I realized that I really enjoyed them, and considered doing more.  When my little daughter and I started painting rocks and using finger paints, I remembered the paint swirl photos I had taken before, and started to photograph the interesting color patterns that we'd make.  Children are great at art because they have no set restrictions on what goes with what.  They are willing to make mistakes and experiment with order and chaos.  Adults stop doing that after a while!  I started to take my camera with me whenever we would paint together and see what shapes and patterns would emerge.  It is very happy mess-making, and I am usually pleased with the variety of unique photos that arise from the very simple act of mixing paint!
